One of perfumery’s most emblematic blooms, this classic floral is the idyllic springtime scent

Referred to in perfumery as "la fleur", jasmine has proven to be one of the most crucial florals in the creation of scent. The bloom is cultivated all over the globe, from Egypt to Morocco, with each harvest's raw aroma carrying its own individual flare and story. And with thousands of flowers required to produce just one small vial of jasmine absolute, it's no surprise that this note frequently resides in the top tier of luxury fragrance.

"Alongside rose, jasmine could be considered one of perfumery’s most emblematic flowers," says Guerlain's famed master perfumer Thierry Wasser. "It is also one of the six signature ingredients that make up our Guerlinade, a secret olfactory hallmark used across Guerlain fragrances. Jasmine grandiflorum [a specific species of jasmine] is sourced at Guerlain from three different regions: Grasse in France, Calabria in Italy and India."

Similarly to the aforementioned rose, this climbing evergreen floral, comprised of over 200 species, is known for its olfactive versatility. When styled with other classic blooms (think tuberose and rose petals) a jasmine fragrance can be fresh, dewy and green. Take Byredo's Flowerhead, for example, a vibrant yet sophisticated bouquet that we could liken to a florists in a bottle. On the other hand, jasmine can also be sweet and playful; often paired with citrus and drupes, it is the origin note for an array of fruity floral compositions.

"For Jasmin Bonheur, we decided to associate the jasmine flower to the sunny orange from the apricot accord, powdery violet from the iris flower and velvety pink from the rose flower," Wasser explains. "This scent is set against a classically elegant, fine chypre base with woody accents of moss and vetiver. The final composition brings an array of joyfully colourful shades to the jasmine." It's perfect for the new season.
